Her story often depicts her as the mortal victim of a savage rape. Her body found in the woods next to a sleeping fawn, who comforted her so she would not die alone. Her assailants went unpunished, so her wish for Justice was granted, and she was reborn as half human + half deer. She punishes men who harm women. Luring them to the woods to trample them.
I see her as a symbol of protection + a shape shifter. Watching over the many MMIW. Granting blessings to those who carry good medicine in their hearts and seeking justice for those who have been harmed. A delicate balance of love + vengeance.
